Clinical Terenure see off late St Mary’s challenge

The Dublin 6 rivals went head to head in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup this afternoon.

St. Mary’s College 11

Terenure College 24

TERENURE COLLEGE SAW off a spirited St Mary’s side to book a place in the next round of the Leinster Schools Senior Cup.

Terenure started the match like a team with a point to prove, after they lost to St Mary’s in a pre-tournament fixture 6-3 before Christmas. An early penalty by Mark Fabian gave his side the lead their early pressure warranted.

St Mary’s started to come into the game more after Terenure’s Jack Boyden was sent to the sin-bin. For the first time in the game, they started to threaten Terenure’s 22, and led 6-3 at the break thanks to two penalty kicks from centre Alexei Schuster.

Terenure started the second half much like the first, but this time their pressure was rewarded with a try in the corner by Zak Vaughan, after good interplay following a line-out. The conversion was coolly converted by Fabian to put Terenure 10-6 in front.

With 10 minutes to go, it looked as if Terenure were going to ease to victory, when Sam Dardis made the most of a fortunate bounce of the ball to score under the posts, giving Terenure an 11-point lead.

St Mary’s never gave up, however, and the fighting spirit they showed throughout the match was rewarded in the form of a try by Tomas Tierney with five minutes remaining. The conversion was missed and the gap was six points with five minutes left.

However, Vaughan’s second try of the day ensured that Terenure avoided a tense last couple of minutes and booked a place in the second round.
