Carabao Cup second-round draw produces just one all-Premier League clash
PREMIER LEAGUE SIDE Newcastle United will travel to Nottingham Forest in the second round of the Carabao Cup, while Brighton and Hove Albion will host Southampton in the only all-top flight tie of the draw.
Fifteen clubs — two from the Championship and 13 more from the Premier League — join the 35 previous winners of the opening round in the sophomore stage of the EFL competition, with the remaining seven first-tier sides absent due to their commitments in European competitions.
Brighton and Southampton’s south-coast derby may be the only game to pit two sides from the top flight against each other, but it is elsewhere that the draw has thrown up its most tantalising match-ups.
Among them, Newcastle’s away trip to the City Ground to meet Forest, four-time winners of the cup, is one of the plum games on show, while Leicester City’s clash with Fleetwood Town pits Foxes and England forward Jamie Vardy against his old club.
Other fixtures include favourable draws for recently-relegated Stoke City and Swansea City, who play Premier League pair Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace respectively.
Championship pace-setters Middlesbrough and Leeds United will be pleased with respective ties versus the Lancastrian duo of Rochdale and Preston North End.
Everton, meanwhile, will entertain Rotherham United while West Ham United will travel to AFC Wimbledon and Forest Green Rovers make their second-round debut away at Wycombe Wanderers.
