FORMER WORLD NUMBER one Caroline Wozniacki has called the officiating at the French Open a ‘disgrace’ .
After being knocked out in the third round on Saturday by Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, the Dane turned her attention to the court officials at the post-match press conference.
She disputed several line calls in the match, including a ball that was ruled to have hit the base line in the second set. It came with the scores tied at 1-1 in the second set with Kanepi holding break point.
“Yeah it’s all gone and it’s disappointing to lose – it always is, especially like this and I’d hoped for more but it wasn’t possible this time and I’ve got to go back and practise and get ready for the next big tournament coming up,” said Wozniacki, who lost 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 to the 23rd seed.
“Well when the ball is clearly out I don’t think there is anything to argue about and if they cannot see then they should have other umpires on the lines or invent hawkeye on these courts because it’s a disgrace that mistakes like this are made.
“It’s not like it could have been in or could have been out – it was clearly out and you know when a ball travels five miles per hour in the third set at 1-1 either the linesman or the main umpire should be able to see the ball as well.
“I plan to try to improve my game and keep improving. I just have to stay positive and in tennis there’s always a next week so that’s the good thing. I was fighting until the end and I think I can be happy about that but it wasn’t enough and I didn’t get the start I wanted in the third.
“It was 1-1 but it should have been 2-1 for me but it ended up 2-1 to her and then 4-1 and I had to fight back. I tried but it was too late.”
