'I've still got a lot to offer... I believe I could have ripped up the league this year'

Adam Morgan could be back in Irish football next season despite his recent departure from Sligo Rovers.

FORMER SLIGO ROVERS striker Adam Morgan hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return to the SSE Airtricity League in 2019.

Rovers announced earlier this month that Morgan’s spell at The Showgrounds had been brought to a premature conclusion by his struggles with an abdominal injury.

With just nine games currently remaining in the Bit o’ Red’s Premier Division campaign, Morgan continues to work his way back to full fitness. It was therefore agreed that a mutual termination of his contract was the best option for both parties.

The ex-England underage international, who scored five goals in a total of 17 games, made his final appearance for Gerard Lyttle’s side as a substitute against St Patrick’s Athletic in June.

“I’m back home in Liverpool now. It works out better for me to do the rehab over here,” Morgan explained to The42. “There’s a lot of lads in the squad at Sligo relying on the physio there. This made more sense.

“I went to the manager and we had a good talk. I’ve got a great relationship with Gerard. One of the most disappointing things for me is that I didn’t get to play under him for a bit longer. It was kind of bittersweet when I spoke with the gaffer and the chairman.

“Obviously they wanted me to be playing and I know I’ve still got a lot to offer. I believe I could have ripped up the league this year. But I was nursing the injury for a while, playing at 60% for two-thirds of my season. I just couldn’t carry on any longer. It was too sore.

“Leaving was for the best but I could be back again. We’ll see what happens. I love the club and I loved my time in Sligo. But when you’re not playing games there it can be a lonely place. That’s all it was. I tend to get lonely in those situations so it was important for me to be somewhere that I feel completely comfortable.

“It just got to the stage where I was coming in and doing the same things every day. It gets repetitive when you’re doing the same stuff on your own and all the lads are busy playing big games. There wasn’t really an end-goal to look forward to. I’d have been cutting it close to get back before the end of the season.”

Morgan, who played three first-team games for Liverpool in 2012, joined Rovers in January after a spell at Halifax Town. He scored four times in his first six appearances in Ireland but the injury increasingly became an impediment to his progress.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the goals would have continued if I hadn’t been playing at 60%,” he said. “I was trying to tell myself that it wasn’t sore but that wasn’t doing me any good. Even if I was getting through games, I wasn’t able to train for days afterwards. That’s how sore it was. It just became intolerable. I couldn’t carry on any longer.”

Morgan added: “I’m still only 24 years old. I made a good start, scoring goals and playing well. The team — me included — went through a bit of a slump but they picked back up and they’ve had some great results. It was just tough having to watch them from the sidelines.

“I’ll be rooting for the lads for the rest of the season, of course. My own focus for now is on getting back to full fitness and scoring goals again. We’ll see what the future holds.”
