Ain't no stopping him: Ryan Giggs signs one-year extension

The 38-year-old Manchester United veteran will play in his 23rd season after a deal was confirmed today.

HE MAY BE approaching his 39th birthday, but Ryan Giggs is showing no signs of stopping and has today announced a one-year extension to his current contract.

The Premier League’s most decorated player broke into Manchester United’s first team back in 1991 and has played a pivotal role in their dominance over the past three decades.

Former Wales captain Giggs has 12 league titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and two Champions League medals to his name as well as holding the record for Premier League appearances and scoring in every campaign since it was founded in 1992.

Having terrorised full-backs on the left wing for years, he has played more centrally during the latter stages of his career and featured 22 times so far this season as a midfielder.

“Ryan is a marvellous player,” said Ferguson on ManUtd.com.

In many ways, he epitomises all my teams here at United: he has constantly re-invented himself, adapted to the changing nature of the game and retained that desire and hunger for success.

“In every training session and match, he is the example for others to follow. The young players in the dressing room have a great chance to learn from a player who will continue to break records that anyone in the game will find hard to beat.”

Giggs added: “When I signed my first contract, I never thought I’d be able to play at United for 22 years, but I feel good and I know I can still contribute to keeping the team pushing for honours.

“Winning the club’s 19th title was a great feeling but this club is all about what we do next and I’m really pleased I can be part of that.”
