Old Belvedere and Terenure continue to set the pace on high-scoring Halloween
THE TOP FOUR in the All-Ireland League Men’s Division 1A has a distinct Dublin hue to it at present, with the three other teams from the capital also leading the chasing pack in mid-table.
Following a high-scoring Halloween, Old Belvedere and Terenure remain level at the summit, on 20 points each, with Clontarf (18) and defending champions St. Mary’s College (15) also within reach.
Young Munster and Cork Constitution both lost for the second round running, while bottom side Ballynahinch were unable to back up last week’s hard-fought win over Lansdowne.
Old Belvedere gradually broke clear of hosts Cork Con thanks to tries from captain Jayden Beckett, Calum Dowling (2) and George Hadden, who crossed late on to seal a 24-7 victory.
Out-half Aran Egan shone for Terenure with 18 points as they accounted for UCD on a 47-25 scoreline. Schoolboy stars Bernard White (2) and Luke Coffey both scored their first league tries for the students.
Dylan Donnellan delivered again for Clontarf with a well-taken hat-trick – taking his season’s haul to nine tries already – and skipper Conor Kelly kicked 14 points, as they beat Ballynahinch 39-21.
There was a late flurry of points at Energia Park where Old Wesley fell 26-17 to St Mary’s. Late tries from Richie Fahy – his second of the game – and Ruairi Shields had the visitors out of reach.
Young Munster lost their grip on a nine-point lead, allowing Lansdowne to win out 36-26 at Tom Clifford Park. Tom Roche’s 82nd-minute try sealed it for Rhys Ruddock’s men.
Meanwhile, Blackrock College have jumped to the top of Division 1B thanks to a runaway 43-16 win over a disappointing Garryowen, their first win at Dooradoyle since February 2011. The back-three of Derry Moloney, Harry Waters, and Barry Galvin all contributed tries.
Second-placed Naas are the division’s biggest scorers, keeping up the trend with a 43-17 dismissal of City of Armagh. Full-back Cillian Redmond crossed for two first-half tries.
Bevan Prinsloo struck late for the second week in a row, with his 76th-minute bonus point try getting Instonians over the line in a terrific battle with Dublin University. The Belfast side prevailed 28-22.
Two points was the winning margin in Lisatunny where Nenagh Ormond overcame MU Barnhall 18-16 courtesy of Conor McMahon’s 83rd-minute penalty.
