Brosnan stars as Everton hold Man United, Irish duo on target in League Cup

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND internationals were to the fore on a quiet Saturday in the Women’s Super League and Subway Players’ Cup.
Courtney Brosnan starred as Everton held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw in the top-flight, while Jenna Slattery and Saoirse Noonan were on target in the same Women’s League Cup clash.
Slattery’s Ipswich Town beat Watford 4-1 at The Hive Stadium. The former Galway and Treaty United star broke the deadlock in the ninth minute with an arrowed finish from range to send the Blues on their way.
Watford’s Irish duo linked up for the equaliser less than five minutes later, as Noonan headed home a corner courtesy of birthday girl Aoibheann Clancy.
But Ipswich scored three goals in the second half, using their transitional threat to settle a contest that was tighter than the scoreboard suggests.
Jenna Dear put them back in front in the 55th minute, before England U20 star Princess Ademiluyi made her impact felt from the bench in the 74th. And Watford’s disappointment was compounded by a Hannah Greenwood own goal in injury time.
In the only other game down for decision in elite English women’s football on Saturday, Ireland goalkeeper Brosnan was instrumental as Everton held Man United at Goodison Park.
Eva Olid’s United went 10 games unbeaten in all competitions – six in the WSL – but will be disappointed not to take more from their trip to Merseyside.
Brosnan captained the hosts and typically stepped up with some fine saves and a clean sheet. “Heroics from Courtney Brosnan kept the Toffees in it as they earned a solid point against the Red Devils on Halloween,” as the match report on the club website reads.
Brosnan was honoured before kick-off with a presentation for her 100th Everton appearance: the 30-year-old hit the landmark against London City Lionesses earlier this month.
Ireland head coach Carla Ward will have been keeping a close eye as the countdown continues to December’s World Cup play-off final against Poland.
