Anna Merveldt opens Olympic dressage campaign

The Italian-based rider is in 14th place overnight after day one in Greenwich Park.

IRELAND’S ANNA MERVELDT braved the pouring rain to post a strong score on day one of the Olympic dressage event.

The Italian-based rider scored 69.772 on Coryolano as the first 25 competitors began the Grand Prix event in London’s Greenwich Park.

Merveldt sits in 14th place overnight but will not know if that is good enough for a place in the Grand Prix Special until the remaining riders have competed tomorrow.

The top seven teams as well as the best 11 individual competitors qualify for the next stage which begins on Tuesday.

Team GB’s Carl Hester and Laura Bechtolsheimer posted the best individual scores on day one. Hester scored 77.720 on Uthopia while Bechtolsheimer was awarded 76.839 for her performance on Mistral Hojris.
