Bryan Robson battling cancer

Former Manchester united skipper undergoes surgery in Bangkok after tumour discovered in throat.

FORMER ENGLAND AND Manchester United captain, Bryan Robson, is battling cancer.

The-54-year-old underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on March 3 in a Bangkok hospital, an Old Trafford spokesman confirmed. Robson is currently Thailand’s national team manager.

The spokesman told the Manchester Evening News that surgeons were ‘confident’ the condition could be treated. They added:

“At this moment, Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.

“Bryan and family have requested that he can continue with his treatment in private and ask that their privacy is respected.”

Barcelona, meanwhile, say defender Eric Abidal’s surgery to remove a liver tumor has been moved forward one day to tomorrow.

The Spanish club says in a statement the operation at its medical clinic was moved forward after a rescheduling of appointments made it possible.

The 31-year-old was diagnosed with the tumor yesterday. Barcelona gave no indication on how long the France international will be sidelined.

Abidal joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2007 and has helped the defending Spanish league champions win eight major trophies, including consecutive league titles and the 2009 Champions League.

He has been a key player in Barcelona’s defense this season, making 33 appearances and scoring his first goal for the club.
