NFL PRESEASON IS probably the worst of all preseasons because very little excitement can come from watching a second string quarterback throw against a third string defence.

However, every now and then something interesting happens and last night’s game between the Chargers and Cardinals had one of the strangest touchdowns we’ve ever seen.

As you can see above, late in the second quarter, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews tried to dive over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown but fumbled the football. Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson pounced on the loose ball and, in a moment of madness, tried to toss a lateral to his team-mate Sam Acho.

Displaying hands of stone, Acho then bobbled the ball until Chargers tight end Antonio Gates knocked it loose, allowing his team-mate John Phillips to catch the ball in mid-air and run it in for an unlikely touchdown.

And we thought this Reggie Wayne score from last week would be the flukiest touchdown of preseason:
