CIARA MAGEEAN WAS denied a European Championship bronze in the final strides after her superb effort in the women’s 1500m final fell agonisingly short.
Mageean gave her all to reel in the leading trio in the home straight but just couldn’t find the final burst to close the gap and snatch a medal.
European indoor champion Laura Muir upped the pace on the last lap to take gold in a time of 4:02.32. Sofia Ennaoui chased her home to take silver with another Briton, Laura Weightman, holding off Mageean for the bronze.

“I’m bitterly disappointed,” a drained Mageean told RTÉ Sport after running 4:04.63.
“I came to try to bring another medal home for ireland, to join Tom [Barr] with some metalwork around my neck, and I gave everything out there and just fell short.
“It was a tough run and I’m proud to be able to go out there and give everything in the Irish vest.”
