VIDEO: Connacht want your help locating a World Cup winning captain

With the help of their supporters, the westerners want to groom future Henshaws and Marmions for Test success.

CONNACHT RUGBY LAUNCHED a fundraising drive today called Grassroots to Greenshirts today and have revealed a lofty ambition – to locate a World Cup winning captain from the province.

The province is hoping that their supporters, at home and abroad, will dig deep in a fundraising drive to search out and develop indigenous talent.

The success of Robbie Henshaw [19] and Kieran Marmion [21] this season has coincided with the club’s best ever run of Heineken Cup results.

Henshaw, Mike McCarthy and Dave McSharry have featured in Ireland squads this year and, as Connacht chief executive Tom Sears told TheScore.ie, the team has beaten the European [Leinster], English [Harlequins] and Pro12 [Ospreys] champions in the past 14 months.

He added, “There is a very special affinity between Connacht and their supporters.

Traditionally, we have been the underdogs and haven’t had the funding or resources of the other provinces… We’re not playing at this. We want to be competitive.”

The ambitious fundraising drive, which calls for fan donations and pledges, has a lofty end target: To supply players to the national team and have a Connacht man lift the Rugby World Cup for Ireland.
