Maguire goes 2-0 but GB & Ireland must share the spoils on day one of the Curtis Cup

The Duke University student was in impressive form.

IRELAND’S LEONA MAGUIRE went 2-0 in her first two matches at the 2016 Curtis Cup but it’s all square at 3-3 between GB & Ireland and the United States at the end of day one at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Enniskerry.

The hosts jumped into a 2-1 lead after the morning foursomes when Maguire and team-mate Charlotte Thomas defeated Andrea Lee and Miki Liu 4 and 2 thanks to some brilliant play on the back nine.

Maguire partnered with Bronte Law in the afternoon fourballs to defeat Sierra Brooke and Bethany Wu 4 and 3 in what would prove to be GB & Ireland’s only victory in the day’s second session.

The Cavan golfer and her partner Law didn’t lose a hole in the match but the Duke University student will team-up with Thomas for a much tougher test Saturday morning when they take on Wu and the world number one ranked Hannah O’Sullivan.

Thousands line the streets to say a final goodbye to Muhammad Ali
