John Daly: Mickelson or Woods should be Ryder Cup captain

We think Daly should do it… if just for the uniforms.

JOHN DALY FEELS either Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods should captain the United States at the 2016 Ryder Cup.

The US were soundly beaten by Europe at Gleneagles in September, with Mickelson openly critical of Tom Watson’s style of captaincy after their sixth defeat in the last seven Ryder Cups.

The PGA of America subsequently formed a task force to examine how the US team should be managed and captained in the future.

Mickelson and Woods are part of that 11-man group, but two-time major winner Daly – who has never played in a Ryder Cup – believes one of the experienced duo should instead take on a player-captain role at the Hazeltine National Golf Course, Minnesota, in two years’ time.

“I don’t know where they are going with a task force – they should just go ahead and pick a captain,” said the 48-year-old. ”My view is that Phil Mickelson should be the next captain and play at Hazeltine.

“He knows everything about the Ryder Cup, so maybe it should be him or Tiger who should be the next captain. We’ve had playing captains over the years, so why not in 2016?”

“If they picked Phil, he would have full team respect. It’s not rocket science why the European team has been winning – it doesn’t need a task force to work it out.”
