Diary of a Fantasy Gaffer: If in doubt, pick Sylvain Distin

When Laurent Koscielny picked up an injury this week, there was only one man to call on…

FORGET THE PREMIER League title race, there is only one run-in that Godfrey is interested in.

The race to finish in the top 500 places in TheScore.ie‘s Fantasy League is truly going to go down to the wire, with TheScore Machine currently 577th, but still just 12 points behind the 498th placed team.

And to help inspire us to make that last necessary push for glory, we’ve chosen the one player bound to get us over the line, the freescoring… Sylvain Distin.

Okay granted, Distin might not be the best Fantasy defender ever (that honour belongs to Seamus Coleman), but Koscielny is injured, and part of an Arsenal defence that has looked anything but solid of late.

It also explains why I somewhat riskily have two players — Emmanuel Adebayor and Jay Rodgriguez — who have just a 75% chance of playing this week.

I’m pretty sure Luis Suarez will score another hatful of goals against Tottenham, but then everyone has him as captain at this stage anyway, rendering his exploits redundant save for the few incredibly brave/silly people who haven’t picked him.

Meanwhile, our other supremely talented foreign striker, Adebayor, has been reverting to type with a few anonymous performances of late (not helped by injury). We can’t say we weren’t warned about his proclivity to not turn up in games both literally and metaphorically, but we’re hoping Liverpool will be the unfortunate team he turns it on against.

So yeah, a hat-trick apiece for Suarez and Adebayor should be enough to keep that top 500 dream alive.
