Division 1A HL: Moran the match-winning hero for Waterford

The De La Salle man’s monster score sealed a dramatic comeback for the Deise.

Waterford 1-14

Tipperary 0-16

A LAST-GASP point by captain Kevin Moran sealed a dramatic win for Waterford in Walsh Park this afternoon.

The De La Salle man launched over a long-range point in injury-time to claim the honours for the Deise after a stunning comeback.

With 12 minutes left, Tipperary looked to be on the road to victory after Seamus Callanan’s tenth point of the game sent them clear by 0-16 to 1-8.

However Waterford mounted a brilliant rally with substitute Pauric Mahony helping to narrow the gap when he rifled over three frees in succession.

Fourmilewater youngster Jamie Barron cut the gap to the minimum with a just a minute left when he pointed before Jake Dillon tied the teams on the stroke of full-time.

And then Moran capped off a great finish for Michael Ryan’s side when he landed the winning point.

The result leaves Waterford very much in the hunt for a place in the league semi-finals ahead of next Sunday’s tie with Galway while Eamonn O’Shea’s Tipperary will seek to pick themselves up from this disappointment when they face Clare.

Tipperary had stormed into an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead with Callanan sharp from the off before Barron fired home the only goal of the game midway through the first-half.

Initiative

Again Tipperary regained the initiative with points from James Woodlock, Callanan, Noel McGrath and Brian O’Meara propelling them into a 0-9 to 1-3 lead.

But the last three points of the half came from Waterford with Dillon and Martin O’Neill (2) on target to leave the teams tied at 1-6 to 0-9 at the break.

Tipperary powered clear again in the second-half with Callanan impressing but despite looking to be on the cusp of honours in the last quarter, it was the Deise who triumphed with a strong finish to the game.
