Injury rules Don Cossack out of Punchestown showdown with Cue Card

Gordon Elliott’s nine-year-old will miss the spring festival with a tendon problem.

THE PUNCHESTOWN FESTIVAL has been dealt a massive blow with news that Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Don Cossack will miss his Kildare showdown with Cue Card due to a tendon injury.

Gordon Elliott’s nine-year-old was scheduled to take on Colin Tizzard’s Cue Card in the Punchestown Gold Cup on Wednesday but the renewal of their rivalry has been postponed.

Racing fans were desperate to see the star chasers go toe to toe again as Tizzard’s 10-year-old fell when well in the mix for Gold Cup glory at Cheltenham last month.

“We noticed Don Cossack wasn’t right when he was coming off the gallops this morning. He has suffered a tendon injury and is definitely out of Punchestown,” Elliott told the Racing Post.

“I’ll be discussing the situation with [owners] Michael and Eddie O’Leary who were informed immediately.”
