Federer through to quarter finals with familiar faces
ROGER FEDERER ADVANCED to the quarter-finals of the US Open overnight along with Robin Soderling, while in the women’s half of the tournament there was a win for Caroline Wozniacki against Maria Sharapova.
The Swiss can now look forward to a possible semi-final meeting with Soderling, who beat him in last year’s US Open final. Federer beat number thirteen seed Juergen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at Flushing Meadows- keeping his run of straight set victories going.
Reigning champion Soderling beat off number twenty-three seed Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils play in another quarter-final along with Sam Querrey and Stanislas Wawrinka who also meet.
The quarter-finals lineup will be finalised today with number one seed Rafael Nadal playing number twenty-three seed Feliciano Lopez and number ten seed David Ferrer vs. number eight seed Fernando Verdasco.
In the featured women’s match Monday, reports AP, No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki defeated No. 14 Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in a contest that saw Sharapova commit 36 unforced errors to only 10 from Wozniacki. In other words, Sharapova did what everyone does when they play “Woz” — the human backboard.
