Get well soon: Eusebio hospitalised with pneumonia

The 69-year-old is recovering from the illness in Benfica.

PORTUGAL’S GREATEST FOOTBALLER Eusebio has been diagnosed with double pneumonia.

Though his condition is not believed to be life-threatening, the 69-year-old will spend Christmas in Benfica’s Hospital da Luz.

Benfica, the club which the legendary player made over 600 appearances for during the ’60s and ’70s, released a short statement on their website yesterday wishing him a speedy recovery.

During a glittering career, Eusebio led the Eagles to 10 domestic titles and the European Cup in 1962 while he also won European Footballer of the Year in 1965 and twice earned the European Golden Boot.

The Mozambique-born striker captained Portugal to a third-place finish in the 1966 World Cup and was the tournament’s top scorer after getting four against North Korea at Goodison Park.
