Grainne Walsh is one win away from a World Boxing Championship medal

Offaly fighter scored unanimous decision win against Hanna Solecka.

OFFALY’S GRAINNE WALSH moved to within touching distance of a world championship medal as she booked her place in the welterweight quarter-finals in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Walsh, 20, beat Poland’s Hanna Solecka by unanimous decision on Sunday morning to take her place in the last eight.

A win against Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova on Tuesday would guarantee a bronze medal at least and make Walsh the first Irish woman outside of Katie Taylor to bring home a world championship medal.

A number of Rio qualification places are up for grabs this week but Walsh’s 69kg division is not one of the three Olympic classes.

Taylor continues her own Olympic bid, and her pursuit of a remarkable sixth straight world title, when she returns to the ring on Monday against Dayana Sanchez of Argentina in the lightweight last 16.
