Grant Forrest claims Spanish Open victory, Shane Lowry finishes strongly

The Irishman secured a top-20 finish.

SCOTLAND’S GRANT FORREST won the Spanish Open on Sunday, finishing with a birdie on the 18th to edge Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, while Shane Lowry earned a top-20 finish.

The victory also earned Forrest spots at next year’s Open Championship in Scotland and the Masters, as well as a prize of more than half a million euros ($560,000).

“I’ve played two Opens and to be going to Augusta, I just can’t get my head round it,” said Forrest, 33.

“You can have a great career in this game and never get to go to Augusta, so I cannot believe it.”

Home favourite Chacarra, who played despite a painful broken toe, was in the clubhouse on 13 under before Forrest’s closing birdie secured victory.

After moving into the top 20 after a 67 on Saturday, Lowry finished tied for 13th, six shots adrift of Forrest, after a strong finish.

The Offaly native registered a bogey-free round, producing birdies on the eighth, 10th and 17th holes to finish with a 68 on day four.
