'If Guardiola was the manager of Manchester United he would hate what he was seeing'

Paul Scholes wants to see more from the Old Trafford outfit as they look to avoid a second straight trophyless season

FORMER MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Paul Scholes has been left unimpressed by the Red Devils in pre-season thus far and believes Pep Guardiola would hate what Jose Mourinho is doing.

United finished 19 points behind Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Premier League last season and have begun pre-season with uninspiring draws against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes.

The signings of Fred and Diogo Dalot have done little to give supporters hope that the gap to City can be bridged, though Mourinho is reportedly still keen to add to his squad before the transfer window closes.

Despite that, though, Scholes has been less than enthused by what he has seen from Mourinho’s side, though he is not writing the ex-Chelsea boss off quite yet.

“As a football person, if you’re a coach and you see your team playing – he [Mourinho] may be happy [with the style of play],” he told beIN Sports.

“It’s a team who grind out results rather than really impresses you. That’s probably what he is happy with, that’s where he has been at his best over the years.

“If Guardiola was the manager of Manchester United he would hate what he was seeing – and it would be different.

“But, the most important thing to him is results, he will be judged on that.”

Despite Mourinho winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League during his first season in charge at Old Trafford, his second campaign ended without any silverware following defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

And Scholes believes a repeat should be considered a “disaster” if the Portuguese cannot secure any trophies in 2018-19.

“Last year was a disappointing year. You don’t have any divine right to win a trophy, I know that, but the way they performed in the league wasn’t at the standard required,” he added.

“They got beaten by Sevilla in the Champions League who are a poor team. Yes, they got to the final of the FA Cup, but every year that Manchester United don’t win something is a disaster, and that will carry on.”
