IT SEEMS GUUS HIDDINK will step in as interim Chelsea manager sooner rather than later after his former employers, the Australian FA, posted their congratulations to social media before later deleting the tweet.
There has been no official word from Stamford Bridge regarding who Jose Mourinho’s replacement will be but it seems increasingly likely that the Dutchman, who led the Blues to FA Cup success while in temporary charge in 2009, will return to the club.
But the 69-year-old has had some difficulties in going back over old ground recently.
In 2014, he returned as manager of the Dutch international side but oversaw a humiliating qualification campaign before his assistant Danny Blind was parachuted in to try and rescue things.
Ultimately he couldn’t and the Netherlands failed to qualify.
Hiddink has found his last number of managerial roles tough – failing to qualify Turkey for Euro 2012 after losing in the play-offs while his stint in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala was underwhelming too.
Former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman has also maintained Hiddink will be given the Chelsea job, telling a Croatian tabloid:
“I don’t know if it’s confirmed, if the club has announced it, but Guus told me earlier,”
