'I won't be the last player to swear on TV' - Wayne Rooney loses ban appeal

Old Trafford striker to miss FA Cup semi-final with local rivals City and the Premier League showdown with Fulham.

WAYNE ROONEY SAYS he is gutted to miss Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City afte the FA this morning upheld his two-match ban.

The England star was hit with the suspension after he swore into a Sky camera at Upton Park on Saturday. He will also a Premier League clash with  Fulham.

In a statement issued through his spokesman Ian Monk, Rooney – who scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge last night – said: “I am gutted to miss two matches, one of which is an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

“I am not the first player to have sworn on TV and I won’t be the last. Unlike others who have been caught swearing on camera, I apologised immediately. And yet I am the only person banned for swearing. That doesn’t seem right.

“Whatever, I have to accept that what’s happened has happened and move on from here. That is what I intend to do.”

Manager Alex Ferguson must now plan for the much-anticipated FA Cup semi-final with the club’s ‘noisy neighbours’ without his in-form striker. Rooney settled the league derby in February with a sensational overhead kick.

The club issued a statement earlier: “Manchester United is clearly very disappointed with the decision,. The club put forward a very strong case to have the punishment reduced, which was unsuccessful.

“Wayne apologised immediately after the match and the club now wishes to move to on to what hopefully will be a very exciting conclusion to the season.”

Rooney had admitted a charge for the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language, but claimed that the automatic penalty of two games was clearly excessive.

The decision means Rooney will be available for the trip to Newcastle on 19 April and he can also play in Tuesday’s second-leg against Chelsea.

There was a possibility the ban may have been increased if unsuccessful, but the FA have stuck to their original judgment.
