Ireland finish 21st at U15 World Cup with playoff win over Cymru

Boys in Green played 10 games in 189-nation tournament.

THE IRELAND U15 team finished their World Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory over Cymru in Baku, Azerbaijan.

This was Ireland’s 10th game of the inaugural tournament that had 189 nations involved.

It was a 21st v 22nd playoff in a 8 v 8 format played across two 20-minute halves.

Ireland opened the scoring on 12 minutes with St Patrick’s Athletic’s Conor Hudson on target.

Cymru then netted twice, on 16 and 19 minutes, to take a lead into the interval. Ireland got their second goal on 25 minutes after Tom Casey slipped a pass inside to Shamrock Rovers club mate Harry Rehill and he fired in from close range.

The winning goal arrived on 36 minutes after a move that involved six Ireland players exchanging passes with Nathan Power setting up Gearoid Moran to smash in off the underside of the crossbar.

This was Ireland’s seventh win of the tournament, where they scored 29 goals, and they finished 21st overall in Tier A and recorded victories over Montenegro, Zimbabwe, England, Cambodia, Northern Ireland, Cameroon and Cymru.

Coach Graham Gartland said: “The performances of all 14 players throughout this tournament have been outstanding, but so too has been their attitude and approach to every aspect of the experience. They deserve huge credit for that.

“The opportunity to represent their country is something the players fully embraced. It was clear in the lead-up to the tournament and throughout that they each take great pride in being Irish. The togetherness they showed as a group was evident in everything they did, both on and off the pitch.

“Every game presented a different challenge, but the players responded positively and continued to try to play their football. That approach is why they achieved so many excellent and well-deserved results.
