WHEN YOU’RE AN American hurling team in Galway for the weekend, who better to learn a bit about the game off than Joe Canning?

The Barley House Wolves, along with members of the Allentown Hibernians, are competing this weekend in the International Hurling Festival out west.

It was during a layover in Shannon on route to Iraq that the U.S. soldiers of the ‘Charlie Company’ were first exposed to hurling and they adopted the game to maintain their bond, forming the Barley House Wolves.

This morning they headed down to Portumna to be given a tutorial in hurley-marking by the ace Galway marksman at Canning’s Hurls workshop. They were joined by cabin crew from the tournament sponsors Aer Lingus and Etihad.

After that it was back up to Castlegar in Galway city for their first Division 3 group game with the Barley House Wolves/Allentown selection triumphing by 8-11 to 0-3 against a Europe selection.

Clearly the tips from Joe paid off.
