Jon Walters named Ireland's senior international player of the year

The Stoke striker took the award into the corner to run down the clock afterwards.

JONATHAN WALTERS HAS tonight been named Ireland’s player of the year.

Walters took the award ahead of Robbie Brady and Wes Hoolahan in a ceremony in Dublin this evening.

The Stoke forward earned praise for his performances in the green jersey which helped Martin O’Neill’s side to Euro 2016 qualification.

Walters was also nominated in the goal of the year category for his effort against Georgia.

Shane Long’s memorable strike against Germany at Lansdowne Road beat that and Brady’s playoff goal versus Bosia however.

Tony Cascarino was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The former Celtic and Aston Villa targetman is the sixth player from the EURO ’88 and Italia ’90 squads to be recognised.

Brighton striker Richie Towell was the winner of the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year following an outstanding season with Dundalk, while ex-Italy international Gianluca Vialli was named as the International Personality of the Year.
