Jonah Lomu attacks 'disrespectful' England as new kit is revealed

New Zealand prime minister, John Key, also weighs in on the argument.

FORMER NEW ZEALAND winger Jonah Lomu was among the names to speak out against England’s new jersey for the upcoming World Cup, after Martin Johnson’s side replicated his team’s famous all-black attire for their latest away kit.

The Daily Mail reports that while many England players have dismissed accusations that they are intentionally trying to wind up their hosts, Lomu was unimpressed with the decision. He said:

“In some ways you are just disrespecting the legacy. The All Blacks are synonymous with being in all black, and England the white shirt they have. I will find it difficult to watch England in a different shirt. I will find it pretty weird to look across the paddock and see them run out not wearing that famous white uniform.”

And Lomu is not the only one who has been less than complimentary about the England side, with New Zealand prime minister, John Key, weighing in on the argument, as he called England “a bunch of wannabes”.

However, England players and staff have dismissed the controversy surrounding the jersey choice. Coach Martin Johnson said his side were “happy with it,” while winger Chris Ashton also defended the decision, saying the talk “doesn’t bother us at all”.

England’s World Cup campaign begins on 10 September, when they face Argentina in Dunedin.
