All aboard! The Joseph Duffy hype train just gathered more momentum

The Donegal man won by first-round submission at UFC Glasgow.

JOSEPH DUFFY PICKED up yet another very impressive UFC win this evening in Glasgow.

The Donegal lightweight submitted Ivan Jorge via triangle choke after 3:05 of the first round of their main-card bout at UFC Fight Night 72 at the SSE Hydro Arena.

Duffy, often more commonly known as the last man to defeat Conor McGregor, is now 2-0 in the UFC having won his debut against Jake Lindsey by first-round KO back in March.

Tonight’s defeat of Ivan Jorge marks Duffy’s fourth consecutive victory — the last three of which have come inside the first round — since he returned from a seven-fight undefeated stint as a professional boxer.

That boxing experience has clearly benefitted the 27-year-old’s game. As he traded strikes with Jorge, Duffy was causing major problems for his Brazilian opponent and rocked him significantly with a big knee.

Jorge was subsequently keen to drag the fight to the ground and appeared to succeed with a takedown. However, Duffy is no slouch there either and Jorge found himself wrapped up in a fight-ending triangle.

The tap came with just under two minutes of the opening frame remaining. It was the first time in his 31 professional bouts that Jorge, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, has been submitted.

“It wasn’t the performance I was looking for but I’m glad to get the win,” said Duffy. “I felt like I forced a few things and I wasn’t necessarily totally happy with how I performed. But it was unbelievable out there.

“I’d like to thank all the traveling fans. I’ve got a lot of fans coming from Wales, Ireland and England, and obviously all the Scots too, so I’d just like to thank them all.”
