La Liga player hit with three-month ban for throwing bottle at referee

Granada’s Dani Benitez will be sidelined until November because of his actions at Nuevo Los Carmenes on Saturday.

GRANADA’S DANI BENITEZ will miss the next three months of competitive football after ugly scenes in their La Liga match with Real Madrid resulted in the referee being hit with a bottle.

The 25-year-old, who is currently on loan from Udinese, was disciplined by the Spanish football federation after television cameras clearly showed him lobbing the sports drink in the direction of Clos Gomez.

In the post-match press conference, he apologised for his actions but has been banned from playing until November.

Jose Mourinho’s new champions were gifted the 2-1 win by an own goal from David Cortes late on and two more of the home side’s players were sent off before the final whistle.
