Laois too good for Galway after second-half scoring spree

The visitors managed just two points in the second half and not even the strong wind could excuse them their ineffectiveness.

Laois 1-20

Galway 0-8

A goal just before half time by Kevin Meaney turned an evenly-matched affair into a completely one-sided one, as Laois went on a second-half scoring spree to blitz dreadful Galway.

The visitors managed just two points in the second half and not even the strong wind could excuse them their ineffectiveness.

Laois worked hard and that paid dividends in that latter period, as they scored 13 points.

Donie Kingston and Ross Munnelly showed well for the victors, while Gary Walsh kicked three points in two minutes towards the end as Tomás Ó Flatharta’s crew ran riot against his former charges.

Kingston and Munnelly had two points each as Laois led by 0-5 to 0-3 when the goal arrived in the 31st minute.

Colm Begley got in behind the Galway defence and timed his pass to Meaney perfectly, just as a retreating defender was about to get a tackle in. The midfielder coolly slotted a low shot between Manus Breathnach and the near-post.

That sparked a mini-flurry of four points, with Darren Strong scoring the pick of them and it was 1-7 to 0-5 at the interval.

Laois came flying out after the restart and Meaney had a point after just 23 seconds. Billy Sheehan followed up immediately afterwards with a very rare score and though Seán Armstrong converted a free at the other end, Laois hit the next seven points to open up a 13-point margin.

There was no comeback from that for Galway and the O’Moores went on to enjoy themselves and a very comfortable win.
