QPR 0-2 Manchester United

It’s Christmas!!! … which means Sky are doing their annual very-Super Sunday. They always pull this stunt, probably to encourage subscriptions as a gift with this significant carrot. First off is QPR-Manchester United. It’s the first time these teams have met in the division since 1995-96 when Eric Cantona scored a 93rd-minute equaliser at this ground to keep United in the title race. If they win today, United can go back on top… at least until City take on Arsenal in today’s really big game.

Rarely for the recent Ferguson era, United name an unchanged team. It’s the first time since August. :

QPR Cerny, Young, Traore, Connolly, Gabbidon, Faurlin, Barton, Wright-Phillips, Mackie, Bothroyd, Helguson

Manchester United De Gea, Smalling, Evra, Ferdinand, Evans, Carrick, Jones, Valencia, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck

And we’re off. United wearing black shorts. Very 1994-95.

GOAL! QPR 0-1 Manchester United

Whatever about 1994-95, it’s 2009-10 all over again. Valencia crosses for Rooney who heads the ball off the ground and in! What a start for United.

And Welbeck almost makes it two at the end of a flowing United move. They are intent in this one.

United are rampant here. This is threatening to be a shellacking for Fulham

Should have been 1-1! Bothroyd puts it well over the bar when he might have scored, but only after Rooney appeared to have been fouled to make the chance

Welbeck has a goal ruled out for offside.

Evans puts a header just over the bar from a corner. Still without a United goal. Gam,e has lulled a bit as QPR fans sing “Thursday nights, channel 5″

Jones powers through for a one-on-one but Cerny diverts it with his foot.

And, not for the first time, should have been 2-0 to United! Nani rips the defence apart to tee up Rooney, but Cerny makes a superb double save, first from the number-10 then from Valencia’s rebound.

QPR then clear the chance from the corner off the line… before Helguson goes up the other end and forces a desperate save from De Gea with his leg.

And ball flashed across the box, just evading Bothroyd. This game is still alive despite United’s general dominance.

Half-time: QPR 0-0 Manchester United

United should be out of sight but QPR have gritted their teeth and ground out a decent performance. They’re still in this, at the least.

Second half underway and Rooney almost does it again, immediately released. can’t quite manufacture a one-on-one though.

United break again with Jones at the centre of it… but QPR frustrate.

GOAL! QPR 0-2 Manchester United

Michael Carrick with a positively Robson-esque goal. The midfielder intercepts a pass in his own half, drives forward and finishes… although Cerny might have done better.

And should have been 3-0 United. A Valencia cross is deflected goalward by Evans but Rooney can’t quite flick it into the net.

Oh that would have been some goal! Rooney releases Welbeck who tries to curl one around from distance but Cerny tips it over.

Hernandez has come on for United, in a very quick recovery from injury.

According to Opta, Manchester United have scored the most first-half goals in the Premier League this season.

Jones hits the post after yet another give-and-go from the defender.

United could well have wiped out City;’s goal difference advantage today. Dominant but wasteful

DJ Campbell almost pulls one back. A scoreline of 2-1 could have been sued for libel.

Hernandez volleys over after a touch from Giggs. The Welshman still hasn’t got his goal for the season yet.

Full-time: QPR 0-2 Manchester United

An easy win for United who were utterly dominant and could have won by far more. Rooney looks to be embarking on another scoring streak.
