Liverpool agree deal to sign Kolo Toure

The Ivorian defender is out of contract with Manchester City on 1 July.

IVORY COAST DEFENDER Kolo Toure is set to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer season.

The Reds announced this evening that they have agreed a deal “in principle” to sign Toure, 32, on a free transfer when his contract with Manchester City expires on 1 July.

The move comes as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to reinforce his defensive options following the retirement of club veteran Jamie Carragher and Danny Wilson’s decision to remain at Hearts on a permanent basis. Toure will become the first Ivorian to play for Liverpool when the move is made official.

Signed by City from Arsenal four seasons ago, Toure made over 100 appearances and helped the club to an FA Cup and their first Premier League title in 44 years.

But since the arrival of Matija Nastasic last summer, his first team opportunities were reduced and he made just 11 league starts in City’s faltering title defence last season.

Ashley Cole WILL now lead England out against Ireland and skipper side
