ENNISCORTHY WELTERWEIGHT, ADAM Nolan, has succeeded in his bid to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Nolan, who fights out of Bray Boxing Club, won each of his three rounds against Romanian, Ionut Gheorghe, to progress to the final on a score of 19-10.

A top two finish was enough in this weight division at the Olympic qualifiers, taking place in Trabzon, Turkey.

This week have thrown up mixed results for Irish fighters, but  Nolan will now join Paddy Barnes, Darren O’Neill, John-Joe Nevin and Michael Conlon on the biggest stage for amateur boxing.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Nolan told the IABA after his win, “I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it. It’s a boyhood dream.”

Tomorrow, Nolan will compete in the welterweight final against German, Patrick Wojcicki.

This evening Tommy McCarthy will face Vladimir Cheles in the heavyweight semi-final, where only the outright winner will qualify.

Before then, the already qualified, Paddy Barnes will be up against home favourite Ferhat Pehlivan.
