Liverpool suspend Sakho following 'possible anti-doping violation'

A report in France claims that Sakho has been taking a fat-burning supplement which caused the failed test.

LIVERPOOL DEFENDER MAMADOU Sakho has been temporarily suspended by the club after UEFA alerted the Reds to a ‘possible anti-doping rule violation.’

The club released an official statement on the matter this afternoon, after an exclusive report from RMC claimed that the 26-year-old French international had been taking a fat-burning supplement and was unaware that one of its component ingredients was a banned substance.

The sympathetic report adds that Sakho was taking the fat burner ‘in a purely personal and therapeutic interest’.

Liverpool’s statement moves to clarify that the player is not officially suspended, but they have taken it upon themselves to prevent him from playing until further notice:

“The player is currently not subject to any playing suspension. However, the club, in consultation with the player, has decided that while this process is followed the player will not be available for selection for matches.”
