MATT KUCHAR RETAINED his lead at the Memorial Tournament but he has company atop the leaderboard after faltering late in the penultimate round.
Kuchar looked set to end Saturday’s round with sole possession of the lead but after a delay in play due to inclement weather, the American bogeyed his final hole to fall into a three-way tie at the summit.
After carding a third-round 70, Kuchar is one stroke clear alongside countrymen William McGirt and Gary Woodland at 14 under through 54 holes in Dublin, Ohio. McGirt stormed up the leaderboard thanks to one of the rounds of the day at Muirfield Village Golf Club — an eight-under 64.
Seeking his first PGA Tour title, McGirt was set up by a flawless front nine, which included three birdies and an eagle from his opening five holes, and he added another four birdies following the turn, though he bogeyed the 16th. Woodland, however, was flawless in his three-under-par 69.
Adam Hadwin (67), Dustin Johnson (68), Jon Curran (68) and Emiliano Grillo (70) are a shot off the pace. World number one Jason Day, meanwhile, looms large at 11 under. After posting a 71 on day two, Day bounced back with a third-round 68, which could have been better had he not double-bogeyed his final hole.
Rory McIlroy is two strokes further back following his 70, two ahead of defending champion David Lingmerth (68). It was not such a good day for world number two Jordan Spieth, who is virtually out of contention after recording a two-over 74 to be 10 shots behind the leading trio.
