GOLAZOS, SCREAMERS, THRONKERS… there was, as usual, some serious strikes in last week’s Champions League matchday.
But what was the best?
1. Julian Draxler
Gent 2 Wolfsburg 3
The German playmaker adorned his side’s away win in Belgium with this delicate chip. It’s made even more aesthetically pleasing thanks to the defender sliding past Draxler like he’s playing baseball.
2. Lionel Messi
Arsenal 0 Barcelona 2
He scored his 81st and 82nd goals to all but knock Arsenal out of this year’s competition. Often the architect of spectacular solo goals, Messi’s first last week saw him turn up on the end of a typically fluent Barcelona team move which ripped the Premier League side apart.
3. Arjen Robben
Juventus 2 Bayern 2
We’ve been watching Arjen Robben score goals like this for over a decade… but they’re still class. This one was the best from a thrilling battle between two of Europe’s old heavyweights.
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
Roma 0 Real Madrid 2
Anything Leo can do… right? CR7′s powers may be on the wane but this strike was a throwback to when he was at the very height of his powers. Cutting in from the wing and shooting powerfully past a hapless keeper was his signature move for many seasons. Top drawer.
5. Yayo Toure
Dynamo Kiev 1 Man City 3
Get that man a cake. Manuel Pellegrini rested some of his top stars in City’s FA Cup tie days previously and a fresh-looking Toure vindicated his manager’s decision with this effort.
