No confirmation yet for Olympic torch Dublin trip, as provisional route details released

The Olympic Council of Ireland could not confirm whether or not its route would encompass a trip to the Republic.

THE PROVISIONAL ROUTE which the Olympic torch will take has been announced, with Irish officials still holding out hope that the journey will include a brief trip to Dublin.

Speaking to TheScore.ie, a spokesperson for the Olympic Council of Ireland said that a final decision on the matter by the International Olympic Committee was likely to be made “early in the new year”.

An extensive tour of the UK has already been confirmed, with 95% of the population set to be within ten miles of the torch at different points in its trip.

It has been confirmed that the torch will travel to various parts of Northern Ireland, including Newry, Belfast and Downpatrick.

It is provisionally scheduled to arrive in the North on 3 June and leave four days later, travelling to over 60 towns and villages during its journey.

The Games themselves will begin on 27 July and finish on 12 August.
