CADDIE STEVE WILLIAMS will not have any action taken against him by PGA or European Tour officials, it has been confirmed.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and European Tour chief executive George O’Grady released a joint statement on Sunday, in response to anger over very questionable comments made by the New Zealander at the annual caddie’s awards dinner in China on Friday.
Speaking about an interview he gave at the Bridgestone Invitational – having been sacked by Tiger Woods – Williams said: “It was my aim to shove it up that black a***ole”.
Fincheam and O’Grady, however, have taken the view that the caddie’s subsequent apology means the matter has been dealt with and is now “closed”.
“We consider the remarks of Steve Williams, as reportedly, entirely unacceptable in whatever context,” a statement from the duo read.
“We are aware that he has apologised fully and we trust we will not hear remarks ever again. Based on this, we consider the matter closed, and we will have no further comment.”
Williams carries the bag of Australian Adam Scott and will work for the golfer at the Australian Open, where he is due to play alongside Woods. Scott, however, is standing by his man.
“I think from my side of things – and my team’s – that the matter has been put to bed. I’m moving on,” he insisted.
