Day of Destiny

Open thread: will it be a miracle or massacre in Gdansk tonight?

This is it, folks. Join us in our open thread to discuss the Republic of Ireland’s chances against Spain tonight.

AND SO WE have arrived at the Republic of Ireland’s day of destiny.

Sunday’s disappointing defeat against Croatia has left the Boys in Green staring elimination in the face. Lose against the reigning World and European Champions Spain in Gdansk and Trap and the boys can pack their suitcases tonight. Forget about Italy.

The maths are straightforward; the possibilities, less so. The Irish camp remain optimistic that they can frustrate Spain and get at least a point tonight, taking a glimmer of hope into that final Group C game in Poznan on Monday.

But Spain are the world’s number one side for a reason and there is a very real concern that if they click into gear, they will have little trouble stuffing a side as poor as Ireland were against Croatia.

So what do you think? Will it be a miracle or massacre in Gdansk tonight? Revenge for Suwon or another night of Irish heartbreak? Gdansking on the Ceiling or Never Gonna Gdansk Again?

Let’s get it all off our chest nice and early — leave your comments below.
