THIS WEEKEND SEES major events occur in the world of both boxing and MMA so it seems appropriate to rekindle the argument between the two heavyweights of popular hand to hand combat.
David Haye takes on Wladimir Klitschko in Hamburg and Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz, amongst others, face off at UFC 132 in Las Vegas in a bumper night for fight fans, but how many fans will tune into both?
The UFC and MMA have enjoyed a stunning rise to the top of the ‘sports entertainment’ ladder. In contrast, the apparent demise of boxing in the last number of years has been well heralded.
Boxing purists have often looked down on MMA, viewing it as a diluted version of the Queensbury Rules game, and although some are fans of both, I find that many boxing fans tend to stick to boxing.
MMA fans will argue that it takes the best aspects of a number of contact sports, including boxing, and is more exciting and technical overall. As revenue streams between the two sports get closer, it seems that MMA could be about to strike the knockout blow, as the seasoned veteran is on decidedly shaky legs.
