IRELAND UNDER-19 heroine Clare Shine fired Raheny United to a 2- 1 away win over Romania’s Olimpia Cluj in their opening Women’s Champions League Group 2 fixture today.
The win gives the Dublin side the best possible start to this year’s European adventure having, by their own admission, come up short of the mark in the competition last season.
Striker Noelle Murray gave the Irish club the lead with a 23rd minute strike that sent them in leading at the half-time break.
Momentum looked to be swinging the way of the hosts after the hour mark when Andrea Voicu levelled the tie.
However, the in-form Shine could not be kept quiet for much longer and she nudged Raheny back in front 10 minutes from time.
The away win was not enough for United to claim top spot in the Group as NSA Sofia put five past Malta’s Hibernians FC. However, the two sides meet on Monday, each hoping to open up a gap at the top of the Group.
