RORY MCILROY LAUNCHED himself right back into contention with a stunning second round at The Players Championship.
After starting the day nine shots off the pace, McIlroy shot a superb 64 — and came within touching distance of breaking the course record.
Teeing up on his final hole, the par-five ninth, McIlroy needed a birdie to card the first-ever 62 at TPC Sawgrass.
But he had to settle for a bogey six and finished the day on eight-under par.
It leaves the world number three two shots off the lead shared by Jonas Blixt and Alex Cejka on -10 after they both shot 67 today.
Overnight leader Jason Day, who teed off at 6.58pm, is on -9 while Shane Lowry is one-over for the day through five holes and on -6 for the tournament.
