Odds of Sam Warburton landing Lions captaincy slashed by bookmakers

Will Warren Gatland ignore the Irish candidates for the big job?

WARREN GATLAND WILL snub Irish stars Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll as he picks a skipper for this summer’s Lions tour. If the bookies are right.

Ladbrokes has suspended betting on the market after what they described as “a flood of money in the last 48 hours” for Wales flanker Sam Warburton.

“In the last six months, Warburton has gone from being a rank outsider to the odds-on favourite,” a spokesperson for the bookies said. “Money talks, and it looks like Gatland has made up his mind.”

The New Zealand-born coach is, of course, very familiar with Warburton, through his day job with Wales.

O’Driscoll and O’Connell have both captained the British and Irish Lions in the past and were thought to be frontrunners for the position again. Gatland was in Limerick last weekend for Munster’s clash with Leinster.
