THE JOINT LONGEST penalty shootout in the history of English football took place in a League Cup game last night.
There were 32 penalties required before there was finally a winner declared in the match between Derby County and Carlisle United as the Rams won 14-13 in the shootout.
The 32 kicks matches the 14-13 scoreline between Scunthorpe and Worcester in the FA Cup second round clash in December 2014.
The game finished 1-1 at the end of normal time with a last-gasp equaliser in injury-time by Mike Jones for Carlisle cancelling out Darren Bent’s second-half goal for Derby. There were no more goals in extra-time before the penalty shootout took place with Slovenian Timi Max Elsnik scoring the winner after Scott Carson had made his third penalty save moments before.
Former England goalkeeper Carson was a central player in the shootout as he scored a goal and saved three penalties.
