History to be made as Spanish Super Cup staged for Morocco between Barcelona and Sevilla

The Spanish Super Cup will see Barcelona returning to Africa for the second time in three months

HISTORY WILL BE made as the 2018/19 Spanish football season kicks off in Africa for the first time ever as Morocco host the 2018 Supercopa between Barcelona and Sevilla.

The match will be played on 12 August in Tangier at the 45,000-seater Stade Ibn Battoutta.

La Liga champions Barcelona will clash with Sevilla whom they thrashed 5-0 in the Spanish Copa Del Rey final in April.

Also making the Super Cup in Morocco historic is that it will be a once-off showdown, breaking from the two-legged tradition.

After beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nelson Mandela Centenary Cup in Johannesburg in May, Barcelona will have good memories of the continent.

“The northern town of Morocco will host the tournament that will feature FC Barcelona and Sevilla FC on August 12, at 22:00 Spanish peninsular time,” confirmed the Spanish Football Federation.

“The Supercopa de España 2018 will be played at the Stade Ibn Battouta in the town of Tangier. The tournament, which opens the official sports competition of the 2018/2019 season in Spain.

“The stadium in Tangier is one of the modern facilities of the neighboring country and has a capacity for 45,000 spectators. It was inaugurated in 2011 with a friendly match in which Club Atlético de Madrid participated.”

Morocco are not strangers in hosting big games after staging the 2013 and 2014 Fifa Club World Cup.

In June they lost the bid to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup at the fifth attempt.
