Do you agree with our SSE Airtricity League team of the month?
WITH THE HELP of our reporters who have been keeping a close eye on the Premier Division action, we’ve compiled our SSE Airtricity League team of the month for May.
Disagree with our selections? Of course you do. Feel free to use the comments section to let us know who you think should have been included…
Goalkeeper
Ger Doherty (Derry City)
Making plenty of important saves along the way, the veteran custodian kept four clean sheets last month as the Candystripes rediscovered their form and remained undefeated throughout May.
Defenders
Johnny Dunleavy (Cork City)
After a difficult couple of years with injuries, Cork City’s versatile club captain is finally beginning to re-establish himself as a valuable asset for the Leesiders.
Aaron Barry (Derry City)
The 24-year-old Dubliner, who had a spell at Sheffield United, has been a rock at the heart of a Derry defence which leaked just two goals in six outings.
Ryan Delaney (Cork City)
Delaney, who’s on loan at Turner’s Cross from Burton Albion until the end of the month, was faultless at the back for the Premier Division leaders, as well as chipping in with three goals.
Midfielders
Trevor Clarke (Shamrock Rovers)
One of the most exciting players in the league to watch, the left-footed 19-year-old has flourished in a role wide on the right, scoring spectacular goals against Bohemians and Cork City.
Aaron McEneff (Derry City)
McEneff has looked very impressive since the season began but May was a particularly special month for the 21-year-old former Tottenham midfielder, who pulled the strings — and netted three times — for a Derry side who are now unbeaten in 10 games.
Jimmy Keohane (Cork City)
Took a while to make his presence felt since swapping Sligo for Cork but the former Exeter City midfielder justified John Caulfield’s decision to bring him to Leeside by making a big contribution in May, when he also scored his first goal for the club.
Darragh Markey (St Patrick’s Athletic)
A shining light in a difficult season for the Saints, the performances of the 20-year-old midfield all-rounder — who has previously attracted attention from Celtic — suggest that he has a promising future in the game.
Brandon Miele (Shamrock Rovers)
Still only 22, the former Newcastle United winger regularly showed glimpses of his enormous potential last month, as he scored for the Hoops in their victories over Bohemians, Galway United and Bray Wanderers.
Forwards
David McMillan (Dundalk)
McMillan continued his fine goalscoring form for the champions in May, finding the net on three occasions to take his tally for the season to nine — which is only bettered by Cork City’s Sean Maguire and Gary McCabe of Bray Wanderers.
Sean Maguire (Cork City)
The Preston-bound striker, who has registered 16 league goals this season, reaffirmed his status as the league’s top marksman by scoring four times for his side last month.
Substitutes
Mark McNulty (Cork City)
Mick Leahy (Sligo Rovers)
Lee Grace (Galway United)
Jamie McGrath (Dundalk)
Lee-J Lynch (Limerick)
Dinny Corcoran (Bohemians)
Danny Morrissey (Finn Harps)
