Stand by your man: McCarthy backs misfiring Doyle

The goals may have dried up for the Ireland striker, but his Wolves manager has vowed to stick with him.

WOLVES BOSS MICK McCarthy believes Kevin Doyle will end his goalscoring drought sooner rather than later.

The Irish striker has only managed to find the back of the net on three occasions so far this season, one of which was for Ireland, and his last for the club came in the 2-2 draw with Swansea back in October.

Having featured in eight Premier League games since then, the 28-year-old is undoubtedly suffering from a dry spell but McCarthy has praised the work rate shown by the former Cork City player and believes it is only a matter of time before his luck changes for the better.

“Doyler is wholehearted and always puts every bit of himself into a game,” McCarthy said in the Daily Telegraph ahead of tonight’s league fixture with Norwich.

“It has just not been happening for him. But I don’t know how many chances we have created for him.”

“He just needs something to happen for him at the other end, like what happened with that deflection against Stoke. For want of a better way of saying it, perhaps we have got all our bad luck out of the way now.”

Wolves, who are only a point outside the relegation zone, have relied heavily on another Irish international, Stephen Hunt, and Steven Fletcher for goals recently.

But McCarthy is adamant that if he can get the right service into his forwards, Doyle can get back to scoring.

“Matt Jarvis has been excellent in the last two and I’m dreaming of him putting some crosses on the heads of Kevin and Steven Fletcher,” he added.
