LUIS SUAREZ INSISTS he did not racially abuse Patrice Evra during Saturday’s 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield, and that he is ‘upset’ by the allegation.
The Football Association have pledged to investigate claims by the Frenchman that Suarez directed racist insults at him during the game, but Suarez denies the claims completely.
Suarez wrote on his official Facebook page: “I’m upset by the acusations [sic] of racism. I can only say that I have always respected and respect everybody. We are all the same. I go to the field with the maximum illusion of a little child who enjoys what he does, not to create conflicts.”
Evra made his claim to French television station Canal Plus.
“There are cameras,” he said. “You can see him saying a certain word to me at least 10 times. There is no place for that in 2011.”
Meanwhile, The Guardian claims that Liverpool will seek a ban for Evra, should the 30-year-old left back’s allegations prove groundless.
The paper posits that, should no United player step forward and say they heard Suarez utter the insult, it will be a case of one man’s word against another’s and that the fact that Evra never raised the issue with referee Andre Marriner during the match could count against him.
