Thierry Henry leaves Arsenal after Wenger tells him to give up Sky Sports role

The former striker wasn’t prepared to give up his lucrative contract with the broadcaster.

THIERRY HENRY HAS quit his role as youth team coach at Arsenal after a row with manager Arsene Wenger over his television punditry duties with Sky Sports.

The former striker was working with Arsenal’s U18 team on a part-time basis and could have continued the role into the new season but has instead decided to focus on his TV career.

Henry was told by Wenger he would have to give up his lucrative Sky Sports contract, which is reportedly worth €4.7 million a year, if he wanted to remain on at the Gunners.

The 38-year-old, Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer with 228 goals in 377 appearances from 1999 to 2007, had been working with youth players as part of his Uefa A Licence course.

Another former Arsenal legend, Tony Adams will take the role with the U18s while Freddie Ljungberg will work with the U16s.

Henry worked with the BBC during the broadcaster’s Euro 2016 coverage.
